#FACEBOOK : Flooded With Campaigners' Requests For Hard Copies Of Information

Reddit user group called How to annoy Facebook sets out to do just that after data sharing gives rise to fresh privacy concerns

A community website appeared to have got the better of Facebook on Thursday after a guerilla campaign overloaded the social network with requests to send out hard copies of personal data it holds on its users.

The campaign, blatantly called How to annoy Facebook, was started by a user on the social news site Reddit and quickly became the number three story in its "what's hot" section.
Under some data protection laws in Europe, Facebook has to send a hard copy – likely to be a CD – of your personal data. In the case of the UK and Ireland, it must send out a CD within 40 days.

However, the group's mischief may be somewhat stymied by the fact that Facebook does not have to supply the information in the format requested.

The UK information commissioner's office told the Guardian that Facebook could lawfully send out the data by email, or whichever format was the most convenient. The social network could even direct users to its "export your data" webpage if that satisfied the request.

Facebook evidently has been flooded with requests — according to technology blog ZDNet, the company's data access request team have been forced to send out emails telling users there will be a significant delay in getting their personal data out to them.

The amount of data would include a user's photo gallery, social calendar, wall posts and all other personal data such as date of birth. ZDNet reported that a typical personal data file will be a PDF that runs to more than 1,000 pages and more than 100MB in size.

The watchdog website Europe vs Facebook received a 780-page personal information file – 34MB in size, roughly the same as eight MP3 music tracks – when it requested data from Facebook.

Facebook had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
The online campaign follows fresh privacy concerns about what data is held by Facebook after it launched features last week that automatically share what users are watching, reading and listening to on certain sites.

Spotify attracted criticism for the changes, which meant that every song a user listened to was automatically shared on Facebook, unless the user explicitly opted out.

The Anglo-Swedish streaming service on Thursday introduced a "private listening" feature in response to users who complained that they didn't want Facebook friends being notified of every song they listened to.

Daniel Ek, co-founder and chief executive of Spotify, announced the changes on Twitter. "We're rolling out a new client as we speak where you can temporarily hide your guilty pleasures. It works like a browser's private mode," he tweeted. "We call it 'private listening' and you can find it in the Spotify/File menu and toggle it on/off."

Christopher Shale Died Of Natural Causes.

Top Tory inquest: Shale’s widow blasts media, coroner says “Natural causes”.

Nikki Shales praising the press yesterday

Tony Williams’ verdict was a lot closer to the truth than Nikki Shale’s

East Somerset coroner, Tony Williams, ruled yesterday afternoon that David Cameron aide Christopher Shale’s death had been caused by heart disease. He had no drugs or drink in his system….that is, the toxicology report was negative. And it only took 14 weeks to find out.
Shale’s widow Nikki rejected media speculation that followed her husband’s death in June, including the hypothesis that he could have taken his own life. Most observers rejected that hypothesis within hours: they were far more interested in the Coroner having asked for a toxicology report.

She said: “It was always obvious to us, and confirmed very soon afterwards, that my husband, my darling husband, died of natural causes. It has been a cause of great regret to our children, to Chris’s family and all our friends that so much inaccurate speculation has appeared in the media with regard to the circumstances of his death. This has really not helped us at a very, very difficult time.”...more at the SLOG

When you own a domain you're a first class citizen of the web. A householder and landowner. What you can do on your own website is only very broadly constrained by law and convention. You can post the content you like. You can run the software you want, including software you've written or customised yourself. And you can design it to look the way you want. If you're paying for a web hosting service and you don't like it (or they don't like you) you can pack up your site and move it to another host. Your URLs will stay the same and so your visitors won't notice. You get a great deal of freedom in return for the cost of running your own site. Your site could still be there in a decade's time, possibly even in a century....read more

#IRAN :What Media Coverage Omits about U.S. Hikers Released By Iran.. By Glenn Greenwald

September 26, 2011 "Salon" --  Two American hikers imprisoned for more than two years by Iran on extremely dubious espionage charges and in highly oppressive conditions, Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer, were released last week and spoke yesterday in Manhattan about their ordeal.  Most establishment media accounts in the U.S. have predictably exploited the emotions of the drama as a means of bolstering the U.S.-is-Good/Iran-is-Evil narrative which they reflexively spout.  But far more revealing is what these media accounts exclude, beginning with the important, insightful and brave remarks from the released prisoners themselves (their full press conference was broadcast this morning on Democracy Now).

Fattal began by recounting the horrible conditions of the prison in which they were held, including being kept virtually all day in a tiny cell alone and hearing other prisoners being beaten; he explained that, of everything that was done to them, "solitary confinement was the worst experience of all of our lives."  Bauer then noted that they were imprisoned due solely to what he called the "32 years of mutual hostility between America and Iran," and said: "the irony is that [we] oppose U.S. policies towards Iran which perpetuate this hostility."  After complaining that the two court sessions they attended were "total shams" and that "we'd been held in almost total isolation - stripped of our rights and freedoms," he explained:
In prison, every time we complained about our conditions, the guards would remind us of comparable conditions at Guantanamo Bay; they'd remind us of CIA prisons in other parts of the world; and conditions that Iranians and others experience in prisons in the U.S.
We do not believe that such human rights violation on the part of our government justify what has been done to us: not for a moment.  However, we do believe that these actions on the part of the U.S. provide an excuse for other governments - including the government of Iran - to act in kind.
[Indeed, as harrowing and unjust as their imprisonment was, Bauer and Fattal on some level are fortunate not to have ended up in the grips of the American War on Terror detention system, where detainees remain for many more years without even the pretense of due process -- still -- to say nothing of the torture regime to which hundreds (at least) were subjected.]
Fattal then expressed "great thanks to world leaders and individuals" who worked for their release, including Hugo Chavez, the governments of Turkey and Brazil, Sean Penn, Noam Chomsky, Mohammad Ali, Cindy Sheehan, Desmond Tutu, as well as Muslims from around the world and "elements within the Iranian government," as well as U.S. officials...read more

VERACRUZ, Mexico - Despite intense security for a national meeting of Mexico's state prosecutors and tough talk from top cops, criminals dumped more bodies in Veracruz three days after gunmen left 35 corpses on a major avenue during rush hour.

A navy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday that police found 11 bodies around town Thursday, even as this Gulf of Mexico port city ramped up security for the prosecutors meeting by deploying hundreds of soldiers, sailors and police on the streets.

It was unclear who left the most recent group of bodies. Officials believe the New Generation gang was behind the dumping of 35 bodies Tuesday on a busy street just a half-mile (kilometer) from the convention hall as a grim message to the Zetas drug cartel, which dominates the region... read more

Spontaneous combustion killed Irish pensioner, inquest rules

Coroner gives first spontaneous combustion verdict in 25-year career after man found dead in unexplained circumstances

Garda

An Irish pensioner found burnt to death at his home died from spontaneous human combustion, an inquest has concluded.

The West Galway coroner, Kieran McLoughlin, said there was no other adequate explanation for the death of 76-year-old Michael Faherty, also known as Micheal O Fatharta. He said it was the first time in his 25 years as a coroner that he had returned such a verdict.

An Irish police crime scene investigator and a senior fire officer told the inquest in Galway that they could not explain how Faherty burned to death. Both said they had not come across such a set of circumstances before.

The assistant chief fire officer, Gerry O'Malley, said fire officers were satisfied that an open fire in Faherty's fireplace had not been the cause of the blaze.

No trace of an accelerant was found at the scene, and there was no sign that anyone else had entered or left the house in Ballybane, Galway city.

The inquest heard that asmoke alarm in the home of Faherty's neighbour Tom Mannion had gone off at about 3am on 22 December last year. Mannion said he went outside and saw heavy smoke coming from Faherty's house. He banged on the front door but got no response, and then banged on the door of another neighbour. Gardai and the fire brigade arrived quickly at the scene.

Garda Gerard O'Callaghan said he went to the house after the fire had been extinguished and found Faherty lying on his back in a sitting room, with his head closest to the fireplace. The rest of the house had sustained only smoke damage.

O'Callaghan told the coroner that the only damage was to Faherty's remains, the floor underneath him and the ceiling above. .

The inquest heard that fire officers had been unable to determine the cause or the origin of the fire.

The state pathologist, Prof Grace Callagy, noted in her post-mortem findings that Faherty had Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, but concluded he had not died from heart failure.

His body had been extensively burned and, because of the extensive damage to the organs, it was not possible to determine the cause of death.

McLoughlin said: "This fire was thoroughly investigated and I'm left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation."

#Twitter: Tortured to death for tweeting? Couple disemboweled and hanged from bridge by Mexican drug cartel... just for criticising them in blog

A couple have been found hanging from a bridge in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo after being disembowelled and mutilated by attackers.

The motive for the gruesome attack was to warn social media users not to criticise Mexican drug cartels on the internet.
Next to the battered bodies was a sign reading: ‘This is going to happen to all those posting funny things on the internet, You better (expletive) pay attention. I’m about to get you.’

The woman, thought to be in her 20s, was tied to the bridge from her feet and hands as her body dangled topless with her innards protruding.

The man’s body, also believed to be in his early 20s, was hanging from just his hands.

Online blogging about violence in Mexico is currently one of the loudest ways it is reported, after some traditional media outlets have been silenced by cartel threats.
Bloggers who release information about trafficking have faced threats in the past, but this might be the first warning to social network users, CNN reported.

Investigator Ricardo Mancillas Castillo told CNN that this form of torture, including disembowelment, has been seen before in drug-related violence but he has not encountered it before with internet threats.
The investigator said the victims will be almost impossible to identify because of the severe mutilation and there were no witnesses.
The bodies were found on Tuesday morning, which is thought to be 36 hours after they were killed.
It will also be impossible to find out whether the victims actually posted anything online about the cartels too, he said.
The two blogs that the attackers signalled out as a warning to internet users were Al Rojo Vivo and Blog del Narco.

Over the last five years more than 34,000 people have died in drug-related violence in the country.

#MI6 :“We can’t allow documents like that to reach anyone who really knows”

I guessed last month that the Daily Mail, having bought the serialisation rights to Gordon Corera’s book about the British Secret Service, The Art of Betrayal, did not like what was in the book, so used it as an excuse to regurgitate its pre-cooked anti-war slogans.

I have now read Corera’s excellent work, and can confirm that this is indeed the case. The Mail subheadline promised: “The scandal of how MI6 – under pressure from Blair and Campbell – produced bogus evidence to make the case for the Iraq war”
The book says the opposite:
Lord Butler’s inquiry said the original intelligence had not been misreported. There was no distortion, he concluded. The original intelligence was simply wrong. This, in many ways, is a far more damning conclusion for MI6 than the notion that the politicians had “spun” the intelligence against the wishes of the spies. The politicians may have pushed and pressed but, ultimately, the problem was that MI6’s reporting was dud.
Corera, in some detail, endorses the verdict of Sir David Omand, the mandarin responsible for intelligence, that MI6 “over-promised and under-delivered”.

The book is a history of the Secret Intelligence Service since the Second World War, so only the last chapter is about Iraq. That chapter is a commendably clear and careful account, pulling together all the evidence from the inquiries, the memoirs and Corera’s own sources, of how MI6’s over-confidence led it to misjudge the thinnest and most unreliable of intelligence.

Corera has a particularly fine quotation from Our Man in Havana, by Graham Greene, which captures the mentality that led Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of MI6, to share untested information with the Prime Minister but not with the experts at the Defence Intelligence Service:
They weren’t seen by experts. You forget this is a Secret Service. We have to protect our sources. We can’t allow documents like that to reach anyone who really knows.

Johann #Hari:It will be racism, not plagiarism or libel, that finally topples Johann Hari

It will be racism, not plagiarism or libel, that finally topples Johann Hari
Johann Hari, the Independent’s disgraced star columnist, issued an apology yesterday for his rampant plagiarism, and for the appalling behaviour he has indulged in on Wikipedia under the pseudonym David Rose: “In a few instances,” he writes, “I edited the entries of people I had clashed with in ways that were juvenile or malicious: I called one of them anti-Semitic and homophobic, and the other a drunk.”

Such an admission makes the paper’s decision not to sack Hari an outrage and a scandal. His victims, who include Nick Cohen and Cristina Odone, will doubtless be consulting their lawyers tonight, if they haven’t already. (My sources tell me that at least one of those two is gearing up to bring an action against Hari for libel – a crime he has now admitted in print.)

One of the more amusing aspects of last night’s revelations were the celebrities who came out in support of Hari: Piers Morgan and Sally Bercow. (I can think of no greater condemnation.) More significant, however, are the number of early supporters who have now gone quiet, anxious that their own reputations should not be tainted by association.

The Independent’s spineless response to this crisis is the worst thing that could possibly have happened to Hari, because the remaining evidence of his antics – some of it really quite astonishing – will now begin to seep out, as I warned it would in the event the Independent’s enquiry proved to be a whitewash.

Hari needed to be cut loose for his career to have any hope of recovery, but, as it stands, both his and the Independent’s reputations lie in tatters. Being forced to pay libel damages, by no means an inevitability until yesterday, will seal the deal, scuppering his chances of ever writing for another newspaper or securing a book deal. He will become untouchable. Damaged goods. Toxic.

One thing Hari’s apology fails to mention – by no means the only thing, but an aspect of the grubby saga that has not received nearly the attention I think it merits – is the gay incest porn that was authored under the same pseudonym of David Rose, using an email address identified with Rose – an email address Rose admitted had been associated with pornographic material.

Because this pornography isn’t just incest porn. It’s also racist in content.

The story, titled “How my little brother learned to be a whore,” describes a black man who comes to be sexually involved with his younger brother. It contains multiple references to stereotypical black behaviours, with descriptions that no black person would ever write himself. To give but one example: “I sucked my teeth and muttered,” writes the protagonist (who is imaginatively named Leroy Jones)....read more

Christopher Shale death: post mortem inconclusive.

toxicology tests to be carried out

Article penned by Mr.Shale published in the Mail on Sunday.

In the modern age, where people don’t join the Young Conservatives to meet a future spouse at a ball, they need to be given a political, not a social reason to become a member of the party. They need to be offered, at the very least, the chance to pick their own candidate and probably far more than that. How many more people would sign up as Tory members if it gave them a real chance to set party policy on tax?

The Cameroons argue that the membership is too small to make this a sensible move, that the result would be unrepresentative candidates and policies that were unsellable to the public. But unless the party in the country is given some real power, it will continue to wither away. If the Prime Minister’s own association can add only 20-odd members in the year its MP enters Downing Street, what hope is there for other local parties?
If the leadership are not prepared to trust their members with some real powers, then they are going to have to find a whole other way to organise the party. Otherwise, it is going to die under them.

Christopher Shale Received Warning of Leaked Memo Before Glastonbury Death

'Christopher Shale, David Cameron's constituency chairman, was warned by Downing Street officials that a sensitive memo written by him had been leaked to a Sunday newspaper shortly before he died at the Glastonbury festival.

The prime minister said that he was "devastated" by the news that Shale, aged 56, had been found dead in a portable toilet at the festival, after apparently suffering from a heart attack. Early rumours that he may have committed suicide were rejected by police.'

#Scientology strikes back at the New Yorker...

The Church of Scientology is certainly no shrinking violet when it comes to defending itself.

Known for its aggressive litigiousness and scorched-earth public relations approach, the church’s latest target is The New Yorker, which in February published a 25,000-word article that painted Scientology as corrupt and cultish.

In response, the church has produced a 51-page glossy magazine and an accompanying three-part DVD that try to discredit The New Yorker, its writers, editors, fact-checkers and sources.

“The New Yorker: What a Load of Balderdash,” reads the cover headline on the publication, Freedom, which is registered as a copyright of the church and bills itself as offering “investigative reporting in the public interest.”...read more

#Scientology : The Apostate

Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology.

by February 14, 2011

On August 19, 2009, Tommy Davis, the chief spokesperson for the Church of Scientology International, received a letter from the film director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. “For ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church of Scientology of San Diego,” Haggis wrote. Before the 2008 elections, a staff member at Scientology’s San Diego church had signed its name to an online petition supporting Proposition 8, which asserted that the State of California should sanction marriage only “between a man and a woman.” The proposition passed. As Haggis saw it, the San Diego church’s “public sponsorship of Proposition 8, which succeeded in taking away the civil rights of gay and lesbian citizens of California—rights that were granted them by the Supreme Court of our state—is a stain on the integrity of our organization and a stain on us personally. Our public association with that hate-filled legislation shames us.” Haggis wrote, “Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.” He concluded, “I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.”.....Read more
